Read Aloud with Madame Angel: Nous faisons le sirop d’érable

March is here and that means Maple Sugar Time!!!! One of my favourite activities to do this time of year is a visit to the farm to see maple syrup being produced. “La cabane à sucre” is a popular French Canadian tradition and while you may not be able to take a field trip to one in person, there are several ways to share this tradition virtually!

I found this wonderful video on youtube that walks students through a visit to an “érablière”. The visuals and language are a great level for your French Immersion student.

I also wrote this Emergent Reader all about a trip to a farm to make maple syrup. Like all of my Emergent Readers, this book is written with simple language for beginning readers. The package contains a “Big Book” version of the story. I often print it out and place in my class library for students to access again and again.

Students also love to have their own version of the book! To save paper, the “Nous faisons le sirop d’érable” package includes half page versions for students to colour or to draw their own illustrations.

“La tire” is such an amazing treat! If you are able, it is fun to make on some fresh snow with your class. If not, students can well imagine what this sweet treat might taste like! Putting pictures in order and writing about the steps to make “la tire” is a great writing activity! This activity is also included in my “Nous faisons le sirop d’érable” package!

And what visit to the “Cabane à sucre” would be complete without a postcard? This template includes both a colouring page for students to simply colour in or a blank version for students to do their own illustrations. Simply fold the page and students can write a simple message to their loved one back home! You can download the Postcard template for FREE when you sign up for my newsletter!

You can purchase your own copy of “Nous faisons le sirop d’érable” in my store, “La classe de Madame Angel” on Teachers Pay Teachers.
