It is fitting that as I write this post on today’s Read Aloud Wednesdays, we are having a huge snowstorm! 20 to 30 cm of snow are expected to fall overnight! This week we returned to the world of Fafounet and my students are loving it!

Fafounet et la tempête de neige by Louise D’Aoust is the fun story of a adventure loving cow! In this story, he experiences a snow storm! Trying to protect himself from the wind, he ends up breaking off a piece of tree that becomes his bobsleigh. As the story continues, his piece of wood gets smaller and smaller until he ends up with a hockey stick!
This month, we are beginning to work on the vocabulary of retells – first, then, after that etc. and I thought this would be a great story to practice sequencing. I made up set of vocabulary cards for the different objects the wood becomes and mixed them up. My students helped put them back into order and we wrote about each object using the simple language structure: Fafounet fait . . . We also began each sentence with our transitional words.
Once we finished the activity as a class, students sat down to write their own versions. I enlarged the writing template to fit an 11X17 page for my students so that they would have lots of room. I was quite pleased with the end results.
Fafounet et la tempête de neige has quickly become a winter favourite in our classroom and it is requested read on a daily basis! I hope your students enjoy it too! Please click on the picture below for the graphic organizer and activity cards I used for this activity.
