Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22. Protecting our Earth and the resources we have is such an important topic to teach young children. I wrote this reader to help my students think of ideas for ways they can help our Earth right now and to provide them with some simple vocabulary to express their ideas.
Big books are a staple in my classroom. Students love the larger print and they are great for two or three children to read together. The repetitive nature of the texts means that after you share it a couple of times, even your most reluctant readers should be able to read the book! All you have to do is print out the book and bind it together. I often will laminate the pages to help the book last longer. However, because you have access to the digital download, you can print off as many copies as you like!
In addition to the Big Book, I find students love to have their own copies! Sometimes I provide them with a mini-book to colour the pages but other times, I give them a blank book with just the text and students need to draw their own pictures or cut and paste the pictures provided. I like to use book boxes in my classroom and students love storing their books in their own personal libraries! The smaller books are also great to send home for students to share with their families!
And our final task with this mentor text is to create a class book! If you have followed me for any length of time, you know I love to create class books! Each child completes a page that I then bind together and place in our class library! I usually laminate the covers but keep the paper pages in the book!
Each year we make enough class books that each child is able to take one home at the end of the year as a souvenir of our year! It is fun to see their growth in both drawing and writing abilities!
