10 jeux de vocabulaire pour la rentrée

“La rentrée” will soon be here and one great theme to start out with is school supplies! Teaching the vocabulary of the classroom is a great way to get your students speaking in French right from the start.  Here are 10 games to help your students practice this important vocabulary!

10 jeux de vocaublaire pour la rentrée

The source for many of the games and activities shared in this post is my Vocabulary Bundle for “La rentrée”!  In addition to all kinds of whole class and small group activities, the resource also includes a set of word wall cards.  Visual cues are so important for our young French learners. Try placing them cards on binder rings and allowing your students to use them at their desks to help support their reading and writing skills.

1. Back to School Board Game

Board games are always a great activity to help your students practice vocabulary!  For this game, students need to spin the spinner and move around the game naming the objects they land on.  The spinner is designed with a maximum of 3 spaces to help the game last a little longer!

2. Write the Room

This activity is definitely a class favourite!  Hid the vocabulary cards around the room. Students need to find the words, record them on the recording sheet and then use the circled letter to decode the secret message!

Short on a photocopy budget? Try placing the pages in these Reusable Dry Erase Pocket Sleeves.  You can then make 4 or 5 copies of the page and have students use dry-erase markers to solve the puzzle and then reuse the sheets for the next group!

3. Self-correcting Puzzles

Self-correcting puzzles are always a great activity. Students need to match the word with the image. Becuase the cards are all different, students can check their answers by making sure the puzzles each create a rectangle. Fast finishers can then time themselves to see how long it takes to build all 30 pieces.

4. Card Games

From Memory, to Go Fish, to Bang these versatile cards are great for a variety of card games!  Teach your students a game a week for the first few weeks of school and they will be loving it all year long!

5. J'ai . . . Qui a . . .?

J’ai . . . qui a . . . games are a great whole class game for French speaking and listening practice!  Hand out a card to each student. The person with the first card starts by saying “J’ai la première carte. Qui a . . .” The person with that object then reads their cards!

The game continues until students get to the end. Once they get the hang of the game, try timing students to see how fast they can get around the “cercle magique”.

6. La tapette à mouches

Flyswatters are so much fun!  The bundle includes the printable version pictured.  One person calls out the picture and the first to “swat it” wins!

Also included is a projectable version on Google Slides™. Display the slide on the board and you can play this game as a whole class!

7. Dominoes

Dominoes is another great game for partners or small groups. Matching words and pictures will help your students develop their skills.

8. Word Building Activity

Bring out the Scrabble tiles or the tiles from a Bananagrams game! Students love using the tiles to spell a variety of words!

9. Clip Cards

To use the clip cards, you will need some Clothes Pins.  I like to put little stickers on the back of my cards so that they become self-correcting.

Students need to match the word to the picture by clipping. This is also a great activity to help with your student’s fine motor abilities.

10. Bingo

And we can’t forget everyone’s favourite Bingo Game!!!!

Bingo is great to play as a whole class or in small groups.  All you need is some Bingo Chips or some sort of markers.

Use the calling cards to call out a word and students need to mark off the corresponding picture on their card.  Complete a line to win the game!

These are just a few of the many games and activities in my “A l’école” Vocabulary Bundle!

This bundle is now available in Canadian Dollars at the teachingfrenchimmersion shopify store!

And as always you can find it on TPT at La classes de Madame Angel!
