Do you use morning messages in your French Immersion Classroom? The morning message routine is one of my favourite ways to start the day! Read on for 10 ideas to use Morning Messages in your classroom!
1. Guess my Word
When writing a morning message, keep in mind the vocabulary you might be targeting. Try hiding some of the words and students can use their word knowledge to figure out what your word is! Place a sticky over each letter and takes some guesses. Gradually remove one letter at a time as students begin to use their sound knowledge to determine what the word might be.
2. Phonemic Awareness Activities
Try writing a few rhyming words in your Morning Message. Can students find the words that rhyme?
Learning about French sounds? Try putting some sounds to practice in your Morning Message.
Working on initial sounds? Have students think about words that start with a certain letter.
4. Letter Writing Skills
By structuring your Morning Message in the format of a letter, your French students will learn how to add greetings and how to end a letter. Change out your greeting each day and your students will become familiar with words like Bonne journée, Bonjour and Salut!
5. Math Survey
Morning messages are a great way to survey your class. Start off with yes and no questions and then you can move into surveys with multiple choices. This is also a great way to review and introduce tally marks!
6. Counting Skills
Counting is another great skill to put into a Morning Message! Try leaving in blanks for your students to help you fill in.
7. Check in Time
A simple “Comment ça va” in your Morning message is a quick and easy way to check in with your students to see how they are doing. It can also lead to some sharing time if you find that students need some additional talk time.
8. Find the Mistake
This one can also be a lot of fun! Make errors and have your students find the mistake! Students love to fix mistakes! You can make “errors” in punctuation, spelling, capitals etc.
9. Tongue Twisters
French tongues twisters are so much to make up and use in your Morning Message!
10. Student input
Short on time? While I usually write the message ahead of time on days when that is not possible, ask your students for their input! Students love to suggest items to put in a Morning Message!
