Poisson d’avril

Do you celebrate “Poisson d’avril” with your class? I must admit that I am not great at playing pranks! I have a hard time keeping a straight face! I have, however, gone around putting fish on the backs of students. It is fun to see how long it takes for students to realize you are up to something!

I find Poisson d’avril is a fun tradition to celebrate and teach in your classroom! Once we are done with all the joking, I like to watch this video that briefly explains the tradition. The French series 1 Jour, 1 Question has this great explanation!

I then have students work on a booklet from my “On s’amuse” series. These booklets are meant to be fun activities! The Poisson d’avril package includes a set of 20 vocabulary cards. The cards can be used as a display or you can print off multiple copies and have students use them to play matching games or Go Fish.

The activity book itself is meant to be photocopied front to back on two sheets of paper! Your students will love designing their own fish, decoding the message, finding words with the sounds “oi” and “on” and completing the maze!

For an additional activity, I also have this fun Poisson d’avril version of Bingo!

And for a quick art activity, we love to work on “Pop Art Style” Art! Students simply need to colour each section using a different colour/shape/line etc. You could also have the students use warm colours for the fish and cool colours for the background. Happy celebrating!
