My students absolutely adore today’s featured book! Another winter themed picture book, La vie secrète des bonshommes de neige by Caralyn Buehner is an engaging book for your early French learners.

La vie secrète des bonshommes de neige, by Caralyn Buehner, features a young boy who builds a snowman. When the snowman does not quite look the same way in the morning as it had the night before, he imagines all the things the neighbourhood snowman might be doing during the night.
The illustrations in this book are fabulous and I used it to talk to my students about different ways they can create a night sky. Many like to just use black but we looked at the different colours the illustrator uses and discovered blues and purples help to convey the image of night. As a response to this book, I had my students create a class book. We used my free set of Winter Themed Activity posters.
To create the book, I had my students use the sentence starter: “Pendant la nuit, mon bonhomme de neige aime . . .” and then complete the sentence with one of the activities from our poster set. Once each child has completed the page, I collate them together with the cover to create a fun book! My students love to read these books over and over again! They love to see each other’s work! I hope your students enjoy venturing into La vie secrète des bonshommes de neige as much as mine do!
