Todays read aloud features a delightful cow and his wonderful adventures as he goes to school! Written by Louise D’Aoust, an author from Quebec, this story and its characters very quickly became a favourite in my classroom!

Fafounet va à l’école is one in a series of books about the lovable cow Fafounet! I always find it a challenge to find books to read that are not translations so this series totally fits the bill as it is written by a Canadian author from Quebec! In Fafounet va à l’école, Fafounet takes his friend “Petite Abeille” to school and adventure ensues as Fafounet tries to impress his love Capucine. The story is so much fun to read aloud as it is filled with expression and drama.
The story is light and fun and my Grade 2 students loved it! In Grade 1, I save introducing Fafounet for the Spring. While the pictures provide great context clues, I find the story is too challenging for students with little to no knowledge of French. However, Grade 2 and 3 immersion students will love it!
With many of the books we read in my classroom, I have activities or “learning goals” in mind. However, I also love to read books to my students simply for pleasure. No responses, or formal activities. Just the enjoyment of reading. Fafounet va à l’école is one of the books. Later on in the year, after students are familiar with the characters and the stories, I have them create their own adventure for Fafounet! It is fun to see the writing that students can do when they use familiar characters.
What books do you like to read “just for fun” in your classroom?
